Grandfather Cuckoo Clocks Will Never Go Out Of Style

Grandfather cuckoo clocks don’t only make great accent fixtures, but these are also highly accurate in time telling. These clocks – with all of their elaborate wood carvings and mechanisms – bring warmth and elegance to any room in your home. Throughout the years, grandfather cuckoo clocks have served as emblems of a classic and stylish timepiece.

A traditional grandfather cuckoo clock is normally housed in a freestanding wooden casing, which stands 6 feet tall to 8 feet tall. The casing could be made from different hardwood materials, such as mahogany, oak, cherry, or ash. The top portion (crown) – split pediment and bonnet are the most common – is the site where most of the carving designs are concentrated. The glass panels on the sides are usually plain in design while the front glass panel might have oblique side patterns.

The mechanical movements, pendulum, and weights are the three main components that are responsible for the function of grandfather cuckoo clocks. Basically, grandfather clocks accurately tell the time through the swinging motion made by the pendulum that will eventually drop the weights down to the base portion. When that happens, the clock has to be wound using a key (8-Day movement), rope or lever (30-hour movement) in order to sustain its operation.

Some grandfather clocks could also have a moon dial on top of the clock dial. This serve as a tracking device of the different moon phases for the whole 29 ½ days of the lunar month.

Grandfather clocks might have some similarities with floor clocks, but these two are not one of a kind. A floor clock tends to have more contemporary constructions – some don’t even have any wooden casing – and the movements and weights are typically absent with these clock types.

One drawback of these clocks is the expensive price (around $780 up to $4,000 or more). That’s why you really should evaluate the product that you’re getting. The product evaluation should not just end with the exterior features, but also the internal mechanisms (the heart of the clock). Make sure that these come from reputable stores or sellers, and if the clock has the necessary certifications. Check the coverage of the manufacturer’s warranty and learn how you’re going to get any repair services in cases of damages.

Howard Miller, Ridgeway, and Bulova are the three most trusted manufacturers of grandfather clocks today. You could find these through online specialty stores, Amazon.com, and eBay. But you could also visit your local clock specialty store to get a closer inspection at the quality and features of the clocks. This will also give you an opportunity to ask more questions pertaining to the product. Since grandfather cuckoo clocks aren’t exactly cheap, make sure to shop around for more great deals.
